| The Basics | |||||||||||
| To earn the Webelo rank a Cub Scout must complete 8 activities that are offered in the new 2003 book. | |||||||||||
| If the Webelo Scout has not previously earned the Bobcat Rank/Badge, it must be earned first. | |||||||||||
| Note that these activities are primarily done at home but are no longer signed off by the parent but instead are signed off and tracked by the Den Leader after the scout presents proof of completion of tasks. | |||||||||||
| Webelo II Scout Parent Responsibilities: | |||||||||||

| The
Webelos of Den 2 got loaded at their last Den Meeting…loaded up with
backpacking gear, that is! The time is rapidly approaching when moms and
dads will no longer be responsible for gathering all of a scout’s
camping gear, and scouts will no longer have the luxury of throwing their
gear into a car and driving to within feet of their campsite. Recognizing
these changes on the horizon, the Den 2 Webelos and Hunter from Den 5 (maybe
a Den 2 wannabe?) started learning camping the Boy Scout way…carrying
your own gear (and some of the Troop gear, too!) into and out of the campsite.
We started with backpacks, then looked at different types of sleeping bags,
some heavy and some light, some good for overnight at a friend’s house,
and some good for 15-Degree nights in the woods. We looked at different
flashlights and headlamps (some small and light and some enormous!), various
cooking gear (again, some light and some heavy), and a whole bunch of other
stuff. We talked about camp stools and chairs, and weight-tested a couple
of different tents. As we explored each of the various pieces of gear, we
divided them into two piles – one for the scout that “wants
to have it all”, regardless of size and weight, and one for the more
sensible scout who tries to pack smart and keep things light. At the end
of the meeting, each scout got to try out each of the two backpacks to see
what the difference in weight would be. Even without food or clothing inside,
the loads were cumbersome and unexpectedly heavy…but not too much
for the Boy Scouts to be! The
Pinewood Derby was also a blast. Congratulations to all the boys that
did their best, and a special congratulations to those who went on to
perform well at the District races! |

| **Special interest item: Feb 13, AJ Glass received his Religious Emblem for the Roman Catholic faith at Christ the King in Norfolk. The service was officiated by Bishop Sullivan and Father Brian. Over 100 Girl and Boy Scouts for Hampton Roads joined in this one celebration and were awarded their religious emblem. | |||||||||||
WEB 2 DEN 2-DEN MEETINGS On
January 21, 2005, the Web 2 Den 2 studied their Engineering activity badge
under the direction of our den leader-Mr. Paul. To help earn this activity
badge, we studied electricity and it gave us all a shock! Electricity
can be caused by moving magnets or electricity in a wire. Next, we made
a working electrical circuit using two batteries, a light bulb and a switch.
That’s not all-we also built a huge catapult to launch our “baseball”.
We learned about types of engineers and what they do. For example, a civil
engineer designs bridges and highways. Engineers also draw blue prints,
plan, repair, fix and test many everyday items around us. Mr. Paul showed
us a blue print of his house and how engineers measure long sloping distances
or property lines. A couple months back some visited Web 2 Den 5 leader’s
house (Miss Sherry) where she had blueprints for drive thru and sit in
Starbucks; learned about the different types of bridges and built some
with blocks. Thanks Neil! Miss Sherry read about bridges found around
the world and we drew a floor plan of her house’s first floor. As
you can see electricity and engineering requires a lot of time, attention
and work. It’s a shock! |

| Webelos
Den 2 spent most of the last month practicing their many Boy Scout Requirements,
and as a result, most of the Den will be earning their Webelos Badges this
month. AJ Glass gave an excellent presentation on Leave No Trace and Citizenship
posters, then showed us his collection of hockey cards. The last Den Meeting
also covered new stuff about the Engineering badge. The boys used electricity
in a wire to move a small magnet, and then moved a magnet to produce electricity
in a wire. The group learned how power plants must step up the voltage to
get the electricity to their homes without losing too much power, and how
the voltage must then be reduced by a transformer once it gets to their
homes. Many of the group even learned hands on about how a tiny transformer
can make 9 volts feel like 200 volts...shocking! They used 4 different types
of switches to complete an electrical circuit, and learned a little about
how electricity flows in aloop (including the mysteries of why one burned
out Christmas tree light can cause the others to go dark). The Boy Scouts
to be also used a hand transit to measure elevation, then constructed a
might catapult to fire harmless masking tape projectiles at the Den 2 Record
keeper (Mrs. B). They are looking forward to putting their engineering prowess
to work at the Pinewood Derby. Rumor has it that Den 2 will be the top den
in the whole Pack! Paul |

| This
month has been a busy month for us! We spent one meeting learning about
foreign currency. Mr. Paul brought in various types and we were able to
study them and feel them to see the differences in each type. It was a great
learning experience and he also gave us a coin of our own to keep! At another
meeting we worked on our Handyman Badge learning how to care for our bicycles.
Mr. Paul brought in a bicycle and we learned how to check tire pressure,
tighten a chain, adjust a seat or handlebars, how the brakes work and so
much more. What a great experience, teaching us to be more self-reliant
and do stuff for ourselves. In a short period of time we will have earned
our Webelos Badges and be on our way to earning the Arrow of Light Award. |

| Family
Overnighter Den
2 held a Webelos overnighter on Saturday October 9th in preparation for
Family Camp later in the month. Nathan Armstrong, Justin Burge, Seth Hurley,
AJ Glass, Andrew Bunt, Ryan Walker, and Ben Boinay all attended from Den
2, and Earl Cross, Daniel Cross, and Nick Boinay attended from other dens.
The scouts covered knot tying, construction of simple shelters, fire safety
and starting fires, outdoor cooking, earning their Whittling Chips (i.e.
knife safety and use), making s'mores, and other camping basics, not to
mention football, flashlight tag, ghost stories, and hide and seek. Thanks
to Kim and Mike Glass for the glow sticks that made "blue vs. green"
team games possible even in darkness, and thanks to the many parents and
other adult guardians who attended and/or assisted behind the scenes to
make it all possible. A special thanks to the lady of the house for her
assistance before, throughout, and after the event. |

We are hard at work now that school has started and we are working towards
our Arrow of Light Award. We know that this year’s Arrow of Light
Ceremony will be the best one yet! We are all working on memorizing the
Scout Oath and getting excited as the time when we will become Boy Scouts
quickly approaches. It is very important that every Webelo Parent and Scout
attend a Troop meeting on Tuesday the 28th at the church. The troop is in
the process of making some changes with the incoming Webelos in mind. They
need our support so please plan on attending. The meeting starts at 7:00. |
